Man dies in Balto. County crash after eluding Pa. police twice

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A man who eluded Pennsylvania police twice yesterday in vehicle chases on Interstate 83 was killed after the stolen sport utility vehicle he was driving crashed last night in Parkton, Baltimore County police said.

The man, whose identity was not released last night, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 8:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Dairy and York roads. A female passenger, who also was unidentified, was taken by helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to police.

A few hours before the crash, Pennsylvania police followed the man, who was driving a Nissan Pathfinder south on Interstate 83, into northern Baltimore County, said county police Cpl. John Young.

The man was wanted in Pennsylvania for forgery and eluding police, Young said. Police lost sight of the Pathfinder after it exited I-83 at Mount Carmel Road, south of Gunpowder Falls State Park.

About 6:40 p.m., as police searched the area, the suspect broke into a house in the 17000 block of Evna Road, just off Mount Carmel Road, and stole keys to a 2001 Ford Expedition. A resident of the house told police she saw a man drive the SUV away, Young said. Baltimore County police found the abandoned Pathfinder and notified Pennsylvania authorities that the suspect had stolen an Expedition.

Pennsylvania police later spotted the Expedition and again gave chase. The suspect, driving south on I-83, eluded police once more. About 20 minutes later, police came upon the crash site, Young said.
