Vivian O. Nutter, 75, co-owner of funeral home

Vivian O. Nutter, a funeral director who co-owned a Baltimore funeral home, died Dec. 20 of diabetic complications at Chapel Hill Nursing Home in Randallstown. The Woodlawn resident was 75.

She was the co-owner of the Nutter Funeral Home, a business she founded shortly after her 1956 marriage to Herbert E. Nutter, who survives her. The business was first located in the 3000 block of W. North Ave. and later moved to its current location on Gwynns Falls Parkway.

Born Vivian Olivia Hines in Roanoke, Va., where she attended public schools, she moved to Baltimore's Clifton Avenue in the 1950s. She worked in the china and silver department of the old Hochschild, Kohn & Co. department store on Howard Street before opening the funeral business in 1959.

She was a member of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association and the Funeral Directors' Wives Association.

An accomplished cook and baker, she prepared large family meals and enjoyed gardening.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Ernest R. Terry Jr. of Reisterstown and Courtney Michael Terry-Nutter of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Deloria Terry of Woodlawn; a brother, Sterling Hines of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Ophelia Strange of Roanoke, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at noon Monday at Douglas Memorial Community Church, Lafayette and Madison avenues, where she was a member and served on the young adult group and usher board.
