Spalding, Bowers rally to edge Georgetown Prep

No. 4 Archbishop Spalding edged Georgetown Prep, 45-40, in the first round of the 13th Slam Dunk to the Beach National Invitational at Cape Henlopen High in Lewes, Del., last night.

After early foul trouble, Will Bowers scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the final period to pace the Cavaliers (7-1).

Spalding was down by seven with seven minutes left, but the Maryland-bound Bowers went 7-for-7 from the line down the stretch to rally his team.

Spalding advanced to an 8:30 semifinal tomorrow against the winner of Cardinal Dougherty (Pa.) and Our Savior New American (N.Y.).

Bogle Invitational

Glen Burnie 68, Old Mill 65: Junior guard Mitch Guest finished with 34 points and made the game-clinching steal with seconds to play to lead the tournament host Gophers (5-0) over the Patriots (3-2).

The Gophers (5-0) will face Edgewood tonight at 8.

Edgewood 73, No. 17 Meade 68: Senior guard Brandon Lamb hit six three-pointers and scored 30 points to give the Rams (3-3) the semifinal victory over the Mustangs (4-2).

Stauffer Capital City Classic

No. 6 Annapolis 85, Wilde Lake 43: Senior center Josh Johnson scored 24 points to go with 16 rebounds and classmate Laronja Owens had 14 points and seven assists as the Panthers (5-1) downed the Wildecats and will face Loyola tonight at 7 in the tournament final.

Loyola 64, Oakland Mills 54: Senior guards Joey Jankowski (15 points) and Essien Ford (29 points) combined for 10 three-pointers as the Dons (4-7) advanced.

Glenelg Holiday Tournament

Glenelg 55, Damascus 48: The Gladiators (3-3) made 15 of 21 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to knock off the Hornets (3-3) of Montgomery County.

Dallas Davidson had 23 points and 15 rebounds for Glenelg, which advanced to today's 8 p.m. final against Poolesville.

Howard Holiday Tournament

Howard 63, Glenelg Country 58: Despite Sean Rozanski's 41 points, including 26 in the second half, the Dragons (4-4) couldn't get past the Lions, who play River Hill in tonight's 8 p.m. final.

Bethel Holiday Tourney

No. 9 Dunbar 71, Phoebus (Va.) 50: Senior guard Herman Hayes scored all 14 points in the second half to lead the Poets (6-1) past Phoebus in Hampton, Va., and into tonight's championship game against host Bethel.
