Support group for first-time parents meets

First-time parents are invited to join a continuing support group and a play group for their babies from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays at Slayton House in the Wilde Lake village center.

The group is sponsored by Wilde Lake Community Association. A nominal donation is requested.

Class will teach pressing flowers in keepsake boxes

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will hold a Pressed Flower Box class for ages 55 and older from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 9 at Florence Bain Senior Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way.

Participants will design a pressed-flower arrangement to use in a glass top for an 8-inch-by-11-inch hardwood box. The box can be used for jewelry or keepsakes.

The cost is $29, including materials. Registration is required.

Family music class to hold demonstration session

Music Together with Ann Quinn will offer a free demonstration class at 10 a.m. Jan. 3 at Ruth Keeton House in the Village of Harper's Choice.

The class - for children up to age 4 and their parents - will include singing, chanting, moving and playing instruments.

Music Together offers hands-on experience with music and movement for young children. Families are encouraged to attend class together to learn activities that can be used at home.

Military

Graduates: Air Force Airman Charles A. Ransom Jr., son of Janet and Charles Ransom of Wilde Lake, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a 2002 graduate of Wilde Lake High School.

Around town

Kwanzaa: The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, St. John the Evangelist Baptist Church and other organizations will sponsor a communitywide celebration of Kwanzaa from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Kahler Hall, 5440 Old Tucker Row in Harper's Choice. Celebrate diversity: River Hill Community Association will sponsor One Day, a multicultural event recognizing and celebrating the community's diversity, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 4 at Claret Hall, in River Hill Village Center, 6020 Daybreak Circle. Parents and tots: Town Center Community Association will hold a 10-week winter session of Parent and Tots Play Group from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning Jan. 7 at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road. A session for children age 2 and older will begin Jan. 7; for children 6 months to 24 months, Jan. 8; and children 6 months to 4 years, Jan. 9. The cost is $25 for Columbia Association residents; $27 for nonresidents. 410- 730-4744.

Ballroom dancing: Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor ballroom dance classes Thursdays starting Jan. 16 at Harper's Choice Middle School. Classes for beginners will be held at 6:30 p.m. An advanced beginners class starts at 7:35 p.m., with intermediate classes at 8:40 p.m. A six-week session costs $60, with a $5 discount for those ages 60 and older.
