Cherokee culture, storytelling, drumming and dancing combine this afternoon to form an interactive program designed to entertain and teach.
Cherokee Joseph Stands With Many will be dressed in native costume when he comes to the Pikesville Branch Library to share traditional stories passed down from his grandmother and great-grandmother.
His stories involve both animals and interaction from his audience. Kids can act out a story or narrate a section through Stands With Many's assistance. The tales include underlying lessons about life, ranging from responsibility to family values.
Cherokee and Iroquois music will be performed by Stands With Many. A typical Cherokee song is called an Echo, in which the audience repeats the singer after every line.
To end the program, Stands with Many leads kids in a powwow-style dance that will have them dancing in a circle, reversing directions and doing a dance called the "crow hop."
The event begins at 2 p.m. at 1301 Reisterstown Road. Kids up to age 6 must be accompanied by an adult. Call 410-887-1234.
