William Thomas
Mount St. Joseph, basketball
The 6-foot-7 junior forward has always played well against Archbishop Spalding, but Sunday afternoon at Mount St. Joseph he turned in the best performance of his career against the then-No. 1-ranked Anne Arundel County team.
Thomas, a left-hander, scored 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked six shots and had three dunks, as the then-No. 4 Gaels pulled a 66-55 upset.
On Friday, Thomas set personal season highs in scoring and rebounding with 23 and 15, respectively, while leading the visiting Gaels to a 66-51 victory over then-No. 18 Cardinal Gibbons.
A Division I prospect who is being recruited by Maryland, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech among many schools, Thomas is averaging 21 points and 13 rebounds this season. He has a 2.8 grade point average.,
GIRLS
Jessie Collins
Arundel, basketball
The senior point guard had 52 points, 15 assists, 12 rebounds and nine steals in three games last week, including 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 48-47 victory over a tough St. Mark's team from Delaware.
Collins, averaging 17 points and 6.3 assists, also had 19 points and 11 assists in a 91-31 romp over Broadneck and 10 points and three steals in a 65-51 win over Bowie.
After helping the Wildcats win the Class 4A state title as a freshman, she suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in each knee. She missed part of her sophomore season and two Amateur Athletic Union seasons. She went to junior nationals last summer with the Chesapeake Hurricanes AAU team. Collins has a 3.5 GPA.
