AACC names new director of counseling services

K. Jill Barr of Annapolis has been named director of counseling, advising and retention services at Anne Arundel Community College.

Barr will be responsible for providing academic, transfer and career services; personal and career counseling; job placement services; services to students with disabilities; retention activities and off-campus advising. She also will work with other Student Services directors to coordinate services and support for new students and offer outreach activities.

Barr previously worked for Washington College of Law at American University, where she was director of the career service employer marketing office for six years. She holds a law degree from State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law. She also holds a bachelor's degree in political science and history, and a master's degree in higher education administration from the University of Delaware.

Gilligan Development gives $7,500 to diabetes center

Gilligan Development Co. of Glen Burnie recently contributed $7,500 to Joslin Diabetes Center at North Arundel Hospital. This is the second year that Gilligan has made a donation to the hospital. Last year's donation benefited to emergency room.

Garry's Grill opens at Quarterfield Station

Garry's Grill recently opened a new restaurant in Quarterfield Station Center in Glen Burnie.

Owners Garry Anderson, Bill Chalmers and Earl Hamilton built the restaurant near Quarterfield Road and Interstate 97.

The restaurant was designed by Alt Breeding and Schwartz, Architects. Construction was done by Commercial Construction Co. The landlord is Quarterfield Station LLC.

SCORE plans workshops for small-business owners

Service Corps of Retired Executives Association has scheduled two small-business workshops for next year.

"How to Start and Manage Your Own Business" will be offered from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 21, and "Let's Prepare a Business Plan" will be offered from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 18. The cost is $45 for each course and classes will be held at the YWCA, 1517 Ritchie Highway in Arnold. Pre-registration is required. The workshops are intended for individuals who operate a small business or those planning to launch a new venture. Information: 410-266-9553.

Health screenings planned at Marley Station mall

Marley Station mall and North Arundel Hospital will co-sponsor health screenings for members of the Marley Milers walking program and area residents next year. North Arundel Hospital physicians and health care professionals will provide the free screenings from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. the first Thursday of every other month (April is an exception).

Scheduled screenings include:

Feb. 6: Cancer risk assessment.

April 2: 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.: skin cancer.

June 5: Pulmonary function.

Aug. 7: Hearing.

Oct. 2: Vision/glaucoma.

Dec. 4: Carpal tunnel syndrome.

The hospital also will provide blood pressure screenings the third Thursday of each month from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Relaxation Station in the mall.

Reservations are not required for the screenings. Participants are screened on a first-come, first-served basis. Information: 410-787-4367.
