County government announces hours for holiday week

Carroll County government offices will close at noon Tuesday and remain closed Wednesday in observance of Christmas.

Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Northern Landfill and Recycling Center will close at noon Tuesday and remain closed Wednesday.

Carroll County public libraries will be closed tomorrow through Wednesday and reopen Thursday. Senior centers will be closed Wednesday. Public schools will be closed all week.

Civil Air Patrol sends food to troops in Afghanistan

The Carroll Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol recently fulfilled a request for snack foods for U.S. military serving in Afghanistan.

The organization received an e-mail message from 2nd Lt. Michael Zabetakis, who is stationed in Afghanistan. He is the son of a Civil Air Patrol member.

The Carroll group sent 193 pounds of snack food items to U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

The Civil Air Patrol is an official civilian auxiliary of the Air Force. The Carroll group meets at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the Army Reserve Center on Malcolm Drive in Westminster.

Preservation fund targets properties, documents

The Community Foundation of Carroll County has announced the formation of a new fund, The Roop/Royer Historic Preservation Fund.

The purpose of the fund will be to preserve historic Carroll County properties, cemeteries, artifacts and genealogical documents relating to the Roop/Royer extended family and to provide public educational opportunities through publications, a Web site, exhibitions, tours and scholarships on topics including Pennsylvania German culture, Mennonite movements, Carroll County mills and early industry, farming and homesteading.

Anyone who wants to make a tax-deductible contribution to this fund can send a check payable to Roop/Royer Historic Preservation Fund to: Community Foundation, c/o Audrey S. Cimino, executive director, 10 Distillery Drive, P.O. Box 170, Westminster 21158.
