SAN DIEGO -- Payback came quick for Paul Wright. The former Blast forward, who was recently released after a dispute with management, scored on his first shot and helped lead the San Diego Sockers to a 14-8 victory over the Blast in front of 3,860 fans at the San Diego Sports Arena last night.
Wright's goal came after just 1:19 of action.
San Diego (6-12), which had been mired in a six-game losing streak, propelled Wright's goal into a flurry of first-quarter success.
The Sockers led 6-0 after one quarter thanks to a pair of Anthony Farace goals. Farace, who finished with four goals, secured a hat trick when he added a goal at the 6:09 mark of the third quarter.
While San Diego's offense was soaring, the Blast struggled to find its scoring punch.
The Blast (5-11) was shut out in the first half for the first time this season.
It had a power-play opportunity in the first half that yielded only one shot on goal.
"Nobody wants to go into the locker room with a duck egg," Blast coach Bobby McAvan said. "We had a few chances in the first half."
When Farace wasn't scoring goals, he assisted on others. A streaking Aaron Susi tallied the only goal of the second quarter when he received a cross-field pass and booted it past a helpless Brett Phillips.
The Blast trailed 10-0 before it found the scoreboard. Danny Santoro scored from 15 feet out and then Tarik Walker found the upper-left corner from just outside the circle.
The Blast closed to within 10-6 on Denison Cabral's 12th goal of the season.
"At 10-6, we felt that maybe we could come even closer," Mc- Avan said. "But this is the same thing that happened at Dallas last week. We dug ourselves a hole.
"Add that Paul [Wright] got off to a brilliant start. San Diego took advantage of his return."
Farace secured it for the Sockers when he scored his fourth goal with just over six minutes remaining.
But Farace collided with the boards after his shot and needed medical attention. He left the field on his own power, but didn't return.
The Blast has dropped both games to San Diego this season. The Sockers won, 20-11, in a meeting in November in Baltimore.
San Diego had not won since that match, a span of seven games.
