Brooklyn Park pupils rewarded for success

THE BALTIMORE SUN

THE FACULTY and staff of Brooklyn Park Middle School are dedicated to giving their pupils everything they need to be successful. Pupils are held to high standards, and are rewarded when the standards are met.

One of the ways that the pupils are rewarded is by being chosen pupil of the month. Each month one sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grader is singled out for academic achievement, pupil involvement, school spirit and consideration for others.

The Brooklyn Park Middle School pupils of the month for September through this month are: Shantel Pumphrey, Tabitha Boone, Destiny Cheeves, Lindsey Hall, Mary Pham, Steven Noonan, Katie Green, Matthew Deitz, Mackenzi Gawthrop, Sammy Shepley, James Delph and David Kincaid.

In addition, pupils Nicholas Stach, Nicholas Gilmore and Daniel Krysiak have qualified to participate in the Reader's Digest Word Power Contest. To qualify each was asked vocabulary questions that required a definition, a derivative or an antonym of a word.

They, with other Maryland pupils, will take a second qualifying test. The pupils with the 100 highest test scores will advance to the state level. The national championship will take place in March in Williamsburg, Va. Congratulations and good luck!

After the holidays

Soon the holidays will be over and folks will be looking forward to spring. The coming of the warm weather gives us an added incentive to work off those extra pounds that have been accumulating since Thanksgiving. The North County Recreation Center's winter classes will make it easier for us to reach our weight-loss goal.

"Aerobic Kickboxing" sounds like a good way to exercise while getting rid of lingering holiday stress. It is also a great way of increasing stamina. The class will be held at 6:45 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Jan 22 in the Brooklyn Park Middle School gym.

Another aerobic activity will be offered Monday and Wednesday evenings at Belle Grove Elementary School. The class "Bio-Aerobics Cardio Fit" will be offered at 7 p.m. beginning Jan. 22.

Yoga offers a total-body workout and increases stamina. A yoga class will be held Mondays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the North County High School auditorium, 10 E. First Ave., beginning Jan. 20.

Those fortunate ones who can eat whatever they want to and never gain an ounce can still have fun at the recreation center.

Adults can learn to make ceramics from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 23, or learn how to sew from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 16.

A wide assortment of classes for children is available. Classes in ceramics, crafts, ballet, jazz and modern dance will be offered.

The complete schedule of activities at the North County Recreation Center can be found at area libraries and merchants. The center is at 196 Hammonds Lane. Information: 410-222-0036.
