Several southern Howard County residents were among the winners at a chess tournament sponsored by the Black Student Achievement Program and the Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County on Dec. 7 at Long Reach High School.
In the elementary school division, James Duffy, a fifth-grader at St. Mary's School in North Laurel, took first place in his section of the division. Justen Figueroa, a fourth-grader at Guilford Elementary School, took second place, and Joshua Montgomery, also a fourth-grader at Guilford, tied for fourth place with Tanner Shields of Running Brook Elementary School.
Justin Montgomery, a seventh-grader at Patuxent Valley Middle School, placed second among the middle school winners, and Kurt Naiker, a ninth-grader at Hammond High School, placed third in the high school division.
About 40 students from 19 schools participated.
LAMP talent show rescheduled for Jan. 15
The LAMP Community Talent Show has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 15 in the cafeteria of Laurel Woods Elementary School.
Students, parents and staff members of the Laurel Woods community will sing, dance, play instruments and read poetry.
The event had been scheduled for Dec. 11.
First Baptist to present 'Walk Through Bethlehem'
First Baptist Church of Savage will hold a "Walk Through Bethlehem," with a live Nativity, angels singing on the church roof, a mock wedding and hot chocolate, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, tomorrow and Sunday.
Admission is free. The church is at Washington and Woodward streets in Savage.

Food drive being held to aid Savage food pantry
H & C Inc. Heating & Cooling of North Laurel is conducting a food drive to benefit the Benevolence Food Pantry of Savage. Customers will receive a $1 discount for each nonperishable food item donated through the end of the year, up to five items.
The company also is collecting nonperishable food items on service calls and will pick up food locally even if services are not needed.

Completes training: Marine Pfc. Bryan J. Passmore, son of Joseph J. and Karen I. Passmore of Laurel, has completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and was promoted to his current rank.

Bird tour: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Patuxent Research Refuge will offer a bird tour for those ages 16 and older from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Jan. 5 at the North Tract, on Route 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 32.
