For St. Paul's, upsetting C. Hall is landmark victory

THE BALTIMORE SUN

If St. Paul's ever had beaten Calvert Hall in basketball, the victory is tucked so far back in history that not even school officials can locate it.

"It's been at least since World War II - if ever," said St. Paul's coach Jack MacMullan.

The 17th-ranked Crusaders scored a win for the ages with Tuesday's 47-36 triumph over the visiting, eighth-ranked Cardinals. They got 19 points from 6-foot-8 center Holden Plack and 17 from 6-5 Ray Brown in a game that matched last year's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference champs against Calvert Hall, an MIAA A Conference power.

Plack grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots, and Brown had eight rebounds to go with three blocked shots. MacMullan credited defensive specialist Quinton Gill with limiting Calvert Hall's high-scoring Jack McClinton to 10 points.

St. Paul's (5-1) will meet 14th-ranked Aberdeen on Dec. 27.

Winning wrestlers

Seventh-ranked Harford Tech finished second in a 16-team tournament at Newark (Del.) High last weekend. The Cobras' Ben Sills (125 pounds) and Brad Dreyer (135) are 4-0 after their first-place finishes, Mike Taylor (119), Tony Gibson (160) and Mike Piorunski (heavyweight) are 3-1 after placing second, and Mike Long (103) is 4-1 after taking third.

The Cobras travel to Chopticon High in St. Mary's County this weekend.

Woodlawn's Corey Lawson (125) beat state runner-up Justin Bradley of Mardela, 5-3, en route to his title.

Teammates Timmy Smith (119) and Brandon Jones (215) joined him on the victory podium as Woodlawn finished fourth in last weekend's Parkside Invitational tournament.

Woodlawn's James Simpson (171) was third in the tournament, in which Poly's Martea Bethea (112, second), Matthew Oakley (160, third) and Derrick Jones (130, fourth) also finished in the top four of their classes.

In the Perry Hall tournament, Kenwood wrestlers Eric Robinson (103) and Kyle Krumholtz (119) each moved to 4-0 with four and three pins, respectively. Aberdeen's John Brown (215) also won at Perry Hall to improve to 4-0.

Top-ranked Mount St. Joseph and third-ranked McDonogh, along with DeMatha of Hyattsville, coached by Elkridge's Dick Messier, are headed for the Beast of the East Tournament - considered the nation's No. 1 high school invitational - to be conducted tomorrow and Sunday at the University of Delaware's Carpenter Center.

Rams ready

High-scoring, defending Baltimore County boys basketball champion Randallstown appears primed to play host to 20th-ranked league rival Woodlawn (0-2) in tonight's league opener.

The third-ranked Rams (2-0) have scored more than 80 points in wins over Southern-Baltimore and Washington's Ballou. They're led by 6-2 All-Metro guard-forward Levi Stukes, 6-4 Terrence Breaux and his brother, 6-8 center Thomas Breaux.

Stukes is averaging 28 points, eight rebounds and six assists; Terrence Breaux, 14 points and 10 rebounds; and Thomas Breaux, 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots for the Rams, who were Class 3A state champions two years ago, but lost their North region crown to last year's 3A champ, Douglass.

"We have a lot of size and athletic ability. I feel like I can go 10 deep" said coach Kim Rivers. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of repeating as county champions."
