Jane Stengel, 74, school crossing guard

Jane Stengel, a homemaker and former school crossing guard, died of heart failure Monday at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia. The Savage resident was 74.

Born Jane Ruppel in Baltimore and raised in Edmondson Village, she was a 1946 graduate of Western High School.

She was a crossing guard in Baltimore County at St. Mark's Parochial School and Catonsville Elementary School in the 1960s and 1970s.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at Resurrection of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church on Brock Bridge Road in Laurel, where Mrs. Stengel was a member.

Survivors include a son, Brian J. Stengel of Savage; a brother, Joseph Ruppel of Kingsville; and two grandchildren. Her husband of 42 years, Albert J. Stengel Jr., a cable splicer with Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co., died in 1992.
