Truck driver is killed in accident at port terminal

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A tractor-trailer driver died yesterday after he was struck by the wheel of a moving crane at Seagirt Marine Terminal in Southeast Baltimore, the Maryland Port Administration said.

Leonard Gaylor Waldron Sr., 62, of the 600 block of A. St. in Chelsea Beach, Anne Arundel County, was standing outside his rig next to a pier at the terminal in the 2600 block of Broening Highway about 1 p.m. when the accident occurred.

An MPA spokeswoman said a gantry crane was about to place a container onto his rig when he was struck by one of the crane's oversize tires.

Waldron suffered extensive leg injuries and was flown by a state police helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He was pronounced dead there at 2:20 p.m.

The accident is being investigated by state and federal occupation safety agencies.
