Educator praises achievements of county's schools

President Bush signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 on Jan. 8, 2002. This new law represents the president's education reform plan.

The new law places the federal government in the driver's seat, as it requires America's schools to describe their success in terms of what each student can do in kindergarten through grade 12.

Carroll County Public Schools is fortunate to have high quality instructional and support staff to help meet the unique and varied needs of the students in the school system. Many of our teachers have been recognized with local, state and national awards for their expertise in the delivery of instruction.

Additionally, 23 schools recently received recognition from the Maryland State Department of Education for evidencing growth in student achievement. Of these 23 schools, 19 schools produced improvements for students with disabilities.

And throughout the school system, on any given day, you can visit an elementary or secondary classroom and find state-of-the-art instructional practices being carried out.

One other area brought to the forefront recently is reading. The Carroll County Public Schools have taken a bold step to deliver reading instruction based on scientific research.

Parents can support their child by beginning early, and continuing throughout the school years, to support the growth and love of reading.

Reading is a fundamental skill that is at the very core of a child's learning. In order for the child to be a life long learner it is vital the child be a capable reader.

While No Child Left Behind speaks about accountability for state and local education agencies it is also a clear directive to parents and caregivers. The business of education goes well beyond the doors of your child's local school. If we are to truly produce world class, highly able students it will take the outstanding instructional staff and the great parent community working together.

Without a doubt, the No Child Left Behind law places many challenges on educators and parents. However, when we form a team to deal with this matter, it doesn't seem nearly as daunting a task.

This holiday season, let's all join hands and help make a difference for a child. Give the gift of reading.
