Police seeking two drivers involved in fatal hit and run

Police were seeking the drivers of two cars that struck and killed an unidentified man last night on Edmondson Avenue near the Gwynns Falls overpass in West Baltimore. Neither driver stopped.

The victim, about 40, was walking in one of two poorly lighted eastbound lanes in the 3200 block of Edmondson Ave. about 7:15 p.m. when he was struck by two vehicles whose drivers continued on, said Sgt. Stanton Clark of the traffic investigation section. Clark said the driver of an eastbound Maryland Transit Administration bus spotted the man lying in the road and called her dispatcher. Clark said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Clark said at least one of the vehicles probably sustained serious damage, including a shattered windshield, and urged anyone with information to call his office at 410-396-2609.

Day care centers closed to halt spread of infection

To contain the spread of a bacterial infection among babies and toddlers, Baltimore City Health Department has temporarily closed a handful of day care centers around the city.

Cases of shigella have multiplied, mainly because day care workers are not adequately washing their hands after changing diapers. Dr. Peter L. Beilenson, city health commissioner, said people should wash their hands with soap and water for 30 seconds.

Shigella cases in the city have jumped from 20 last year to 627 this year. The infection, which causes diarrhea, fever and vomiting, is spread through contact with an infected person's stool, or by eating or drinking contaminated food or water. It can be treated with antibiotics. Information: 410-396-9534.
