Howard County's annual tree-lighting, "Howard County is AGLOW," which had been scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at Centennial Park in Ellicott City, has been canceled.
Melting and refreezing snow and cold forecast for the weekend might create dangerous, muddy conditions in the park, according to Gary Arthur, director of Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, the event's sponsor.
Parking had been planned on an open field; the park's hard-surface parking lots could not accommodate the 800 to 1,000 vehicles expected for the event. Icy conditions may be hazardous for pedestrians, and electric lines could not safely be run across wet ground.
Arthur said there are no plans to decorate the live tree, which stands near the stage area on the south side of the park, unless weather conditions change.
More than 2,000 people attended the event last year.
