BOYS
Travis Holmes
McDonogh, wrestling
The 152-pound senior scored three first-period pins in a combined 3 minutes, 25 seconds to win last weekend's Michael J. Caruso Tournament at St. Benedict's High in New Jersey. Holmes raised his career victories total to 89 with his 52nd career fall, pacing the third-ranked Eagles to a third-place finish in the team standings behind New Jersey's Peddie School and host St. Benedict's.
Holmes was a second-team All-Metro pick last winter after capturing his first state championship and ending the season with National Preps Tournament All-American honors. A three-sport standout, Holmes was a second-team All-City/County selection as a linebacker in football this past fall. Holmes also starred as a midfielder on McDonogh's fifth-ranked lacrosse team last spring.
GIRLS
Chandrea Jones
Institute of Notre Dame, basketball
The Indians guard, an All-Metro first-team pick last season as a freshman, averted the sophomore slump in a huge way, registering one of the rarest feats in basketball during No. 3 IND's season opener - a quadruple double.
The 5-foot-9 guard contributed 20 points, 13 steals, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to a 74-27 win over Catholic. She followed that effort with 16 points, six steals, six rebounds and four assists in a 68-55 loss to a tough Good Counsel team Sunday at the Gator Tip Off Tournament at St. Paul's.
The first freshman on the All-Metro team in six years, Jones is building a reputation for dominating season openers. A year ago, she scored 31 points against Bullis Prep in her high school debut.
