N. Arundel Hospital names Physician of the Year

North Arundel Hospital has announced that vascular surgeon Dr. U. Rao Sunkara has been named Physician of the Year. The award was established this year to recognize a member of the hospital's medical staff who has made significant contributions to the success of the institution and who best exemplifies its goal to provide excellent patient care.

The hospital also announced that Dr. Bradford Carter has been named director of surgical oncology at Tate Cancer Center. The center is scheduled to open next year.

Hospital opens new unit for care of elderly patients

North Arundel Hospital has announced the opening of a geriatric evaluation and management unit on the hospital's fourth floor.

The six-bed acute care unit will serve patients age 65 and older with a history of Alzheimer's disease or dementia and who are prone to wander or susceptible to falling. Patients who have had a mental status change or have exhibited new confusion also will be admitted to the secure unit.

A registered nurse and two nursing assistants will provide care to the patients.
