It was only fitting that guard Katie Latonick bailed out No. 11 Spalding yesterday.
Latonick, who leads a group of seven sophomores on the Cavaliers' varsity but is the only one who starts, hit two three-pointers in the final minute of double overtime to lift host Spalding to a 52-46 victory over No. 5 Severna Park in the season opener for both teams.
"We started by telling her, 'You have the green light when you walk in the gym,' " Spalding coach Deb Taylor said. "We moved it to, 'You have the green light when you get out of bed in the morning.' "
Latonick hit six of 13 shots from behind the arc to score a game-high 18 points. In the first overtime, Spalding trailed 41-36 with under two minutes remaining before scoring five straight. Latonick sank a three-pointer from the top, left corner of the arc with 57 seconds left to force another overtime.
In the second extra session, Severna Park led 46-44 when the Cavaliers reeled off eight straight points over the final 58 seconds. Latonick hit back-to-back threes from the same spot with 58 and 30 seconds to go, putting Spalding ahead to stay.
"I guess that was just my sweet spot this game," Latonick said. "I wasn't hitting them in the beginning of the game, and that was making me real mad. I had to step up for my team. Nobody else was hitting them, so I had to."
Senior forward Lizzy Bayly chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds and six steals for Spalding, which won despite shooting 26 percent from the field.
Severna Park, which started five seniors, shot 36 percent from the field. Senior guard Lauren Hall finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals, and senior forward Julia Waters added 13 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Falcons sophomore guard Laura Moore came off the bench to hit a three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
"We've got a lot of work to do to get better," Severna Park coach Bill Giblin said. "We came out real sluggish."
