County announces information numbers for winter weather

Howard County government reminds citizens to call 410- 313-2900, the 24-hour snow emergency information line, to check on snow and road conditions in the county and to track trash and recycling services during inclement weather.

During snowstorms, citizens can also access the Howard County home page (http:// www.co.ho.md.us) to track the location of snowplows working county roads. Information on the weather is also available on Gtv, Channel 70.

During a storm, the county plows roads marked as snow emergency routes first. All roads are spread with de-icing materials. Residential roads are plowed when snow stops. Residents should avoid parking on cul-de-sacs to give the plows room to maneuver.

Information about trash and recycling: 410-313-6444. Snow removal or fallen trees: 410-313-7450. Water main breaks: 410-313-4900. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Hobbit's Glen golf course to be meetings topic

Representatives of the Columbia Association will attend several village board meetings to discuss recommendations for proposed improvements to the Hobbit's Glen Golf Course and answer questions.

Residents are invited to participate in the discussions.

The meetings are scheduled at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dorsey's Search; 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at Long Reach; 7:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at Kings Contrivance; and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at Harper's Choice.

Conference is to focus on child abuse prevention

Prevent Child Abuse Maryland and representatives of faith denominations will present a conference, "The Faith Community's Response To Child Abuse and Neglect," from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia.

Speakers will discuss the nature and complexity of child abuse, and they will describe community resources and opportunities. A report will be compiled to be shared with faith communities and educators in Maryland.

Admission is $30, including lunch, refreshments and a resource binder.

Tobacco enforcement unit seeks high school students

The Howard County Health Department's tobacco enforcement unit seeks high school students to help with undercover enforcement operations.

The volunteers must be ages 14 to 17, possess a valid Maryland driver's license or MVA identification card and be of good moral character.

The students and their legal guardians will be required to meet with a tobacco enforcement agent to sign a consent agreement and discuss the student's role in the program.

Hours are flexible. Enrollment in the program will satisfy student community service requirements.

NAACP meeting is set Thursday in Oakland Mills

The NAACP will hold a general membership meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Other Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center, 5851 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia.

Gift-wrap booth at mall available through Dec. 24

The National Council of Jewish Women, Howard County Section, and Howard County General Hospital's Volunteer Auxiliary will staff a gift-wrap booth at The Mall in Columbia.

The booth is on the lower level of the mall, near Lord & Taylor.

The cost to wrap gifts will range from $1 to $4, depending on the size of the box. Unusually large boxes may cost $5 or more. The service will be available through Dec. 24.

Proceeds will help support hospital services and community organizations.

Soroptimist International meeting at TGI Friday's

Soroptimist International of Howard County will meet at 6:15 p.m. Dec. 19 at TGI Friday's in Restaurant Park, off Routes 175 and 108, in Columbia.

The agenda will include dinner, a collection of gifts for the needy family adopted by the club, and a gift exchange among members.

The Soroptimist club is part of an international organization for women in management and the professions, working to advance human rights and the status of women through service projects.
