Dr. James E. Taylor, 74, hospital pathologist

Dr. James E. Taylor, a retired hospital pathologist, died of heart failure Monday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The Lutherville resident was 74.

Born and raised on Railroad Avenue in Lutherville, he graduated from Polytechnic Institute in 1946. He served in the Navy as an aviation electronics instructor from 1946 to 1951.

He attended the University of Maryland on the GI Bill, earning his bachelor's degree in 1955. He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1958. He completed an internship in pathology at the former U.S. Public Health Hospital at Wyman Park and his residency at what is now University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Taylor worked as a pathologist at then-Mercy Hospital during the 1960s before joining the staff of then-St. Agnes Hospital in Southwest Baltimore in 1968. He had been president of the hospital's medical staff.

After his retirement in 1992, Dr. Taylor volunteered preparing tax returns at area senior centers. He also was active in alumni affairs at Poly and the UM medical school.

An avid golfer, he was a member of Baltimore Country Club. He also enjoyed traveling.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Lemmon Funeral Home, 10 W. Padonia Road, Timonium.

Dr. Taylor is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Gloria J. Caylor; a daughter, Dr. Jennifer Taylor Fortney of Durham, N.C.; a brother, Dr. F. Colson Taylor of St. Michaels; and several nephews and nieces. More obituaries next page
