Glenelg Country's hot shot has cool 33-point average

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Sean Rozanski of Glenelg Country is off to a terrific scoring start, averaging 33 points after four basketball games.

The Dragons (2-2) lost a pair of games at the Barrie Tournament in Silver Spring the weekend before Thanksgiving, but Rozanski gave his team something to cheer about by scoring his 1,000th career point in the tourney opener against Georgetown Day. His total has since grown to 1,107.

Rozanski needed 24 points against Georgetown and scored 36. The game was stopped midway through the third quarter to present him with a special basketball. He also scored 24 points in a consolation loss to Barrie.

The Dragons bounced back last weekend with a pair of victories at the Pallotti Tournament in Laurel, and Rozanski was named Most Valuable Player by scoring 36 points in a win over Tome and 35 in the championship game against Chapelgate.

Transfers

Transfers can make or break a team's season, and there are several transfers in boys basketball this season.

Atholton has a transfer from DeMatha's JV, Jonas Vaitkus. The 6-foot-3 junior's strength and athleticism should help the Raiders, who were 3-20 last season.

Oakland Mills has a transfer from Missouri, Andy Rogers, a 6-4 senior forward. He'll give the Scorpions much-needed height.

Hammond has three transfers. Kyle Cannon is a 6-4 sophomore from Wilde Lake. Rachid Frazier is a senior guard from Long Reach who didn't play last season. And Alton Nash is a junior forward from Long Reach who is a good rebounder.

Defending county champion River Hill has a 6-3 senior guard Devrin Fleming from Wilde Lake. The Wildecats picked up a transfer from Florida, 6-4 All-County football player Dane Randolph. But they lost 6-7 junior Aris Williams to Washington's Georgetown Prep, 6-7 Rasaan Martin, who moved to Phoenix, and 6-4 Kyle Cannon, now at Hammond.

Year of the guard

A lot of boys basketball coaches are happy with the quality of their guards.

River Hill returns shooting guard Wes McCoy and point guard Richie Jackson, both of whom started.

Oakland Mills returns shooting guard C.J. King and point guard Bryce Gaeng.

Howard's lone returning starter is shooting guard Tim McNulty, one of the area's top three-point shooters.

Long Reach returns an excellent pair of guards: Jared Bradford, who averaged 14.0 points, and point guard Mike Smelkinson, who averaged 12.5 points.

Wilde Lake has only four returning players, all guards: Brandon Graham, Steve Bacon, David Licks and Kevin Showe.

Hebron's Marin out

Mount Hebron 6-2 center Sara Marin suffered a hairline ankle fracture and is expected to miss the first couple of weeks of the season.

The eighth-ranked Vikings, who graduated last season's starting point guard, center and first player off the bench, will move 6-0 Kristen Waagbo to Marin's spot.

Waagbo, an All-Metro first-teamer last season as a junior, has been slowed by a bout with mononucleosis. Waagbo is improving, but it may take a while before she's at full strength.

The Vikings open their season today, playing host to No. 15 McDonogh. The schedule gets more difficult from there, as Mount Hebron opens its conference schedule next week against No. 7 Long Reach, followed by games against Centennial and No. 9 Seton Keough.
