Remarkable mix from Hyunah Yu

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The silvery voice of soprano Hyunah Yu has been heard often in the Baltimore area. The Korean-born Peabody grad made her Baltimore Symphony Orchestra debut back in 1996 and has since appeared with other ensembles, invariably to memorable effect. On Sunday, she will give a recital for the Shriver Hall Concert Series that promises an exceptional range of repertoire and music-making.

Her program has clearly been thought through meticulously to achieve an intriguing mix of composers, poets, styles, moods (perhaps Yu's pre-Peabody degree in molecular biology helped give her this flair for organizing musical material). Her substantive dose of German repertoire includes several of Mendelssohn's most beguiling works (including "On Wings of Song"); some charming, infrequently performed songs by Richard Strauss; and a selection from the Italienisches Liederbuch by Hugo Wolf, whose musical settings of Italian love poems constitute one of the subtlest creations in all of vocal literature.

There will be room, too, for a set of songs by elegant and eloquent French composer Francis Poulenc and another by the greatest American composer of art songs, Ned Rorem. Rounding things off will be a very rare Italian aria -- by Schubert.

Award-winning Hyunah Yu, accompanied by her sister, pianist Hyon-Sook Park of the Peabody Preparatory faculty, will give her recital at 5 p.m. Sunday at Shriver Hall, Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N. Charles St. Tickets are $27, $14 for students. Call 410-516-7164.
