County police, volunteers plan open house Dec. 13
The Anne Arundel County Police Department, in cooperation with RSVP/Senior Corps at the Department of Aging, will hold a Police Volunteer Open House from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Police Headquarters, 8495 Veterans Highway, Millersville.
Volunteers provide clerical and administrative support within the county district stations, crime lab, property management, personnel and other offices.
The Police Reserve Officer Program is a uniformed service in which volunteers augment department personnel. Reserve officers may control traffic in emergency conditions and at public events such as parades, races and funerals. Reserve officers may also serve as captain's aides, providing courier service of police vehicles.
Qualifications for volunteers with the Anne Arundel County police include:
Ability to work daytime hours within the time frame of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Office skills, computer skills and people skills.
Ability to make a long-term commitment to the police.
Authorization for a criminal background check.

Maryland City site offers several classes
The Maryland City Senior Activity Site is offering the following classes for those 55 and older:
"Line Dancing," at 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
"Drawing and Sketching," at 10 a.m. Tuesdays.
"Crafts," at 10 a.m. Tuesdays.
"Painting," at 1 p.m. Tuesdays.
"Tai Chi," at 1 p.m. Tuesdays.
"Beginning Ballroom Dancing," at 1 p.m. Thursdays.
"Quilting," at 1 p.m. Thursdays.

@SUBHEDReservations open for Myrtle Beach trip
Marge Torrance, trip coordinator for O'Malley Senior Center, is accepting reservations for the Myrtle Beach Getaway trip planned for March 2 through March 6. The trip consists of four nights at the Wyndham Myrtle Beach Resort with an ocean view from participants' private balconies.
The price of the trip is $387 per person for double occupancy or $486 per person for single occupancy. Deposit is $100 per person due when placing reservations. Balance is due by Jan. 28. Seniors talk:
Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin will talk to seniors about changes in the Medicare Plus Choice program and HMO options for seniors in Maryland at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Pascal Senior Center. New senior site:
The county Department of Aging has announced the opening of a senior activity site at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church, 8402 Brock Bridge Road, Maryland City. The site will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. 301-317-7983.
Holiday bazaar:
Annapolis Senior Center will hold its annual holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the center. 410-222-1818.
Flu shots:
The county Health Department has scheduled flu immunization clinics for adult residents of Anne Arundel County from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Health Services Building, 3 Truman Parkway, Annapolis. Inoculations are free, but $10 donations are encouraged. Pneumococcal vaccine will be available at all clinic locations. It is recommended for people age 65 and older, for people with chronic heart or pulmonary conditions, and for people who have had their spleen removed or who have sickle cell anemia. 410-222-7343.

Membership drive:
Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie, has begun its 2003 membership drive. There is no annual membership fee. Membership is open to ages 55 and older. Members are entitled to participate in classes, trips, meals and games and have access to the billiards room and library. The center also offers events such as holiday luncheons, theatrical programs and an annual picnic. 410-222-6680.
Bereavement support:
South County Senior Center offers "Bereavement: Working Through It," a free, informal discussion group with Norma Crane, for those age 55 and older. The group meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
Sewing classes:
Annapolis Senior Center will offer sewing classes for seniors at 10:30 a.m. the third Tuesday of every month. The classes are free, but senior center membership is required. 410-222-1818.
Caregiver support:
National Family Caregiver Support Program and the county Department of Aging's Respite Care Program will offer a series of free seminars next month. The series includes "Down and Dirty," on managing incontinence, Friday at O'Malley Senior Center; and "Is It Time?" on placement issues, Dec. 16 at Pascal Senior Center and Dec. 20 at O'Malley Senior Center. 410-222-6227.
Volunteers sought:
The county Department of Aging is seeking volunteers for its Seniors Volunteering for Results program. Volunteers will participate in an orientation and receive on-site training and supervision, accident and liability insurance and qualification for Anne Arundel County SHARE.
