A tanker truck overturned yesterday, spilling 500 gallons of gasoline and closing a Brooklyn street for more than six hours, city fire officials said.
The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of Frankfurst Ave. near the Harbor Tunnel, said city Fire Department spokesman Kevin Cartwright.
Firefighters and workers from the city's Department of Public Works and the Maryland Department of the Environment contained the spill.
Crews used salt, sand and an absorbent boom to soak up the gasoline.
The 8,700-gallon Fleet Transport tanker overturned on a curve, Cartwright said. A 1,100-gallon compartment was punctured as the tanker fell on its passenger side. The driver was not injured.
Frankfurst Avenue, which was closed from Hanover Street to the end of the peninsula, reopened about 3 p.m., city transportation officials said.
The Interstate 895 on-ramp on Shell Road was briefly closed during the cleanup.
