Osmar Guido "Ozzie" Hebert, a retired boating liaison officer for the state Department of Natural Resources and mill enthusiast, died of complications from an infection Sunday at his Centreville home. He was 67.
Mr. Hebert was born in Baltimore and raised in Towson. He was a 1953 graduate of Towson High School and earned his bachelor's degree in forestry from Purdue University in 1958.
He began his career with the Maryland Department of Forests and Parks in 1958 and was promoted three years later to district park supervisor for the northern section of the state. His responsibilities included park operations, planning and land acquisition.
Named chief of resource protection in 1968, he was administrator of the statewide Forest Protection Program.
From 1983 until retiring in 1988, Mr. Hebert was DNR's boating liaison officer in charge of regulating recreational boating and resource management for the Chesapeake Bay.
At his death, Mr. Hebert was a bus driver for the Queen Anne's County Department of Aging. An avid fan of water-powered mills, he also was in charge of operating the Old Mill in Wye Mills.
Mr. Hebert was a member of the Bay Country Moose Lodge, Kent Island Yacht Club and Chesapeake Commodores' Club. An avid outdoorsman, he liked fishing and camping.
Services are being planned for a later date.
Mr. Hebert is survived by his wife of 37 years, the former Mary Ellen Poling; two sons, Dean O. Hebert of Owings and Eric O. Hebert of Gainesville, Fla.; a daughter, Heather L. Hewitt of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and three grandchildren.
