Navy's Courtney Davidson and Towson's Mia Chapman both came out of last weekend averaging 22 points a game, with each player finding a hot shooting hand as their seasons got under way.
While Davidson's scoring tear steamed forward last night as the Midshipmen played host to the Tigers at Alumni Hall, Chapman's came to an icy halt, and the result was a 64-52 Navy win in front of 505 fans in Annapolis.
Davidson led the Midshipmen (2-1) in scoring for the third straight game this season, scoring a game-high 22 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field and making all nine of her free throws.
"Courtney Davidson is their go-to player," Towson coach Joe Mathews said. "She shoots the ball well. Our game plan coming in, believe it or not, was to try to limit her touches and try to contain her. We weren't able to do that."
All but four of Davidson's points came in the first half, but the four free throws she hit after halftime were big ones that helped stave off a rally by Towson (0-2) that had cut a 13-point deficit to 49-45 with 8:50 to play. She also extended her Patriot League-record free-throw shooting streak to 32 straight.
Meanwhile Chapman, who had 22 points against UMBC Saturday, finished with only seven last night against a Navy defense designed to limit her looks from three-point range.
Lisa Steinmetz shadowed Chapman for most of the first half before giving way to Davidson and Maile Shimoda in the second half. Chapman never got it going, frustrated both by the size advantage the Navy defenders had on her 5-foot-5 frame, as well as the zone defense Midshipmen coach Joe Sanchez used off and on throughout the night.
"We knew [Chapman] was their primary three-point shooter, and we didn't want to give her any room to shoot that shot out there," Sanchez said.
"We rotated some players on her, and we figured we'd take our chances. We'd take the three away from her and, if she wanted to penetrate the lane, that's fine."
Navy dominated early, leading by as many as 15 before taking a 36-25 lead into halftime.
