PARIS - French antiterrorist police detained six suspected Islamic militants in the predawn hours yesterday, including five of Pakistani background, police officials said. The six are suspected of belonging to a network that supported Richard C. Reid, a Briton who pleaded guilty last month in Boston to having tried to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight in December with explosives hidden in his shoes.
The raid was the latest in four waves of arrests in four days, as the French police, like those elsewhere in Europe, remain on high alert to thwart possible attacks by radical Islamic groups. The sweeps illustrated the intricate connections among radical Islamic groups across Europe and beyond.
The police staged raids in seven locations, including restaurants frequented by Pakistani refugees and private apartments, but the principal target appeared to be an Islamic center in Faubourg-Saint-Denis, a working-class district north of central Paris, where a prayer leader, Imam Kamel Din, was among those detained.
Agence France-Presse quoted congregants as complaining bitterly that heavily armed police officers broke into the mosque with dogs. They were particularly incensed that the incident occurred during Ramadan, the holy month of sacrifice.
The six men are suspected of involvement in a radical network that offered support to Reid, who tried to blow up American Airlines Flight 63 from Paris to Miami with explosives in the soles of his black high-top hiking shoes.
