Latkes from the oven
Hanukkah, which begins at sundown Friday, traditionally is celebrated with fried latkes.
The latkes symbolize the oil that miraculously lasted in the temple eight days, although the health-conscious might worry about the fat in those potato pancakes. Kretschmer Wheat Germ has a way to enjoy the tradition without the oil - no-fry potato latkes.
Mix 2 cups of shredded potatoes, 1 cup of chopped onion, 1 cup of wheat germ, 2 egg whites and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper (salt is optional) and drop by 1/4 cupfuls onto cookie sheets sprayed with no-stick cooking spray.
Press the potato mixture into patties and bake for 15 minutes at 400 degrees, then turn and bake for 10 more minutes or until evenly browned and crisp. Serve with applesauce or sour cream, if desired.

Tupperware now is partying with Target. The maker of food-storage containers will sell about 50 of its products in 1,148 Target stores nationwide. Last year, Tupperware placed its items in a few SuperTarget stores.
In this expanded arrangement, members of Tupperware's sales teams will be in the stores to assist customers and demonstrate products. They also will answer questions about Tupperware parties.
Among the Tupperware products that will be featured in the Target housewares department will be tumblers, measuring cups, mixing bowls, canisters and some toys.
A rainbow of new items
Is nothing sacred anymore? First there was green ketchup, then colored fries. Now Pepperidge Farm and Joe Corbi's Pizza are joining the color bandwagon. Pepperidge Farm, which has been making Goldfish Crackers for 40 years, is introducing Goldfish Crackers in red, orange and violet.
The crackers will be sold in traditional bags for about $1.79 for 5.5 ounces.
Meanwhile, Baltimore-based Joe Corbi's has teamed up with Crayola to produce a line of pizza kits that include eight blue and red crusts, four different colored sauces, and cheese. The kits, sold by school groups and sports teams to raise money, sell for $17.50. For information, call 888-526-7247.
