Robert Emmet Dunne, a retired banker and decorated combat Marine, died of diabetes Friday at his Annapolis home. He was 54.
Mr. Dunne was born in New York City and raised in Arlington, Va. In 1965, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he earned his General Education Development degree.
Wounded twice in combat while serving in Vietnam, Mr. Dunne was decorated with two Purple Hearts. His other decorations included two Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
After being discharged from the Marines with the rank of sergeant in 1969, Mr. Dunne earned an associate's degree in business from Northern Virginia Community College. He also studied business management and banking at George Washington University.
Mr. Dunne began his banking career in 1977 with Maryland National Bank in College Park, working in lending and collections. From 1983 to 1985, he was manager of yacht financing in Horizon Creditcorp's Annapolis office.
In 1985, he joined Farmers National Bank of Maryland as assistant vice president of marine lending. He retired in 1993.
He enjoyed playing rugby and sailing. He was a member of the Eastport Yacht Club, where he held several offices and helped plan the Volvo Leukemia Cup. He also served as chairman of the club's annual Lights Parade.
Mr. Dunne's marriage to the former Debby Lynne ended in divorce.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Eastport Yacht Club, 317 First St., Annapolis.
Mr. Dunne is survived by five brothers, Timothy Dunne of Colonial Beach, Va., Christopher Dunne of San Diego, David Dunne of Arlington, Va., Frank Dunne of Virginia Beach, Va., and Greg Dunne of Portland, Ore.; and five sisters, Mary Rose Dunne of Arlington, Connie Dunne of Portland, Anet Dunne of Santa Rosa, Calif., Peggy Dunne of Novato, Calif., and Laura Gordon of Colorado Springs, Colo.
