An 84-year-old Jarrettsville resident died yesterday after his car slammed into a tree near his home, the Harford County sheriff's office said.

William John McFadden of the 2000 block of Nelson Mill Road was driving south about a block from his home about 10:30 a.m. when his 1967 Ford pickup truck ran off the road for unknown reasons and struck a tree, according to Ginger Rigney, sheriff's office spokeswoman.

McFadden was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before noon, she said.
