PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Stephanie Kines Towson
When it came to overall game and overall sense of the game, no one excelled more than Kines. The 5-foot-10 middle hitter led the No. 2 Generals (18-1) to the championship of the prestigious Bulldog Tournament, a second straight Baltimore County crown and the Class 2A state final.
A powerful hitter with an amazing hang time, Kines often decided in midair whether to pound the ball or tip it into an open spot.
An All-Metro first-team pick last season, Kines averaged 3.19 kills and 1.1 blocks a game, but those numbers usually grew in the big matches. Kines had 11 kills in the state title loss to Glenelg and 27 kills in the Baltimore County final.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Martin McCrone
Mount de Sales
In moving to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference after winning the B Conference title last season, the Sailors didn't skip a beat. They made it all the way to the A Conference final before falling to McDonogh, a team they split with during the regular season.
In only their fourth year as a varsity program, the Sailors finished 17-4. What makes the accomplishment even more impressive is that McCrone had only one club volleyball player on his team.
FIRST TEAM
Emily Berman
Towson
A powerhouse 6-1 middle hitter in only her third year of volleyball, Berman keeps getting better with every match, becoming a more complete player. Not only did the repeat first-team pick lead Towson in kills with 3.25 a game and blocks with 1.2 a game, but the senior passed well and had a potent serve.
Bruna Fonseca
Dulaney
A repeat first-team selection, Fonseca ran the offense for the No. 5 Lions (16-3), who reached the county title match and the 3A state semifinals. Quick, intense and highly competitive, the senior setter averaged 9.48 assists a game as the Lions swept every match they won.
Stephanie Heard
Towson
The area's premier defensive specialist, Heard cleaned up everything her teammates couldn't stop at the net. The 5-4 senior provided the key element for a high-powered offense - accurate passing. In the state final vs. Glenelg, the Gladiators tried to serve away from her because her passing was so precise.
Roberta Holehouse
CHEN
The up-and-comer on this year's team, the 5-7 outside hitter led the No. 13 Bravehearts (16-1) to the Maryland-DC Private Schools title by averaging 4.3 kills a game. A solid all-around player, the sophomore had another offensive weapon - a jump serve that aced the opposition 36 percent of the time.
Jessy Morgan
McDonogh
A three-time first-team pick, the senior setter led the Eagles (16-4) to the IAAM A Conference title. She contributed 553 assists, an average of 7.5 a game. Morgan, who signed early to play lacrosse at the University of Virginia, also played a role defensively with 147 digs and 77 total blocks.
Abbey Petrecca
Perry Hall
The 5-10 senior outside hitter provided more than a third of the Gators' attack. Averaging 2.6 kills a game, she helped the No. 15 Gators (16-3) make it all the way to the 4A state final. Petrecca, who had 17 kills in the state semifinal match, also led her team in digs with 216.
Stacey Wasserman
Owings Mills
The 5-8 setter contributed 483 assists this season, an average of 8.47 game for the No. 12 Eagles, who finished with a 15-3 record. The junior already holds the school record for career assists. Wasserman also displayed a spectacular serve, acing the opposition 103 times.
Lindsey Wenderoth
Owings Mills
At 5-4, the junior doesn't look like an imposing hitter, but she already has set a Eagles career kills record. This season, the outside hitter averaged 3.9 kills a game. In addition to her big numbers, she was exceptionally efficient, scoring kills on 53 percent of her hits.
Jennifer Wylie
Dulaney
After missing almost all of last season with a broken foot, Wylie burst back on the scene as the area's premier outside hitter. The senior, an All-Metro second-teamer as a sophomore and an outstanding all-around player, averaged 4.46 kills a game as the Lions' primary attack option.
