William D. Rust III, 82, operated insurance firm

William D. Rust III, who operated an Arbutus insurance agency, died of complications from diabetes Tuesday at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital.

He was 82 and had lived more than 40 years in Halethorpe before he moved to Ellicott City several years ago.

Born in Baltimore, he attended local schools and worked for various insurance firms until 1960, when he established his own agency, William D. Rust III Insurance, on Southwestern Boulevard in Arbutus. He retired in the mid-1990s.

During World War II, he served in the Coast Guard and was stationed in Baltimore from 1942 until 1945.

In 1945, he married the former Mary Ann Ingrilli. The couple lived in Woodlawn before they settled in Halethorpe in 1950.

He raised goldfish and kept a goldfish pond behind his house in Halethorpe. He collected model trains and had a model train set up in the basement of the house. He was a member of the B&O; Railroad Museum.

He also was a member of the National Rifle Association, American Legion Post 109 in Arbutus and the former 13th District Republican Club, which was active in Southwest Baltimore County politics.

He also was a member of the Halethorpe Kiwanis and for 19 years was treasurer of Everyman's Bible Class at Halethorpe Community Church. In earlier years, he had been president of the Halethorpe Elementary School PTA, and was an active parent in the Cub Scouts.

Services were Friday.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, William D. Rust IV of Catonsville and James Michael Rust of Halethorpe; a daughter, Nancy Lynn Lauer of Ellicott City; a brother, James E. Rust of Timonium; a sister, Helen Stoykov of Pompano Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; two nephews and one niece.
