Today's games
Salisbury (9-1) at King's (8-2)
What: First round of NCAA Division III tournament
Site: Robert L. Betzler Field, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Time: Noon
Radio: WICO (1320 AM )
Series: First meeting
Last week: Salisbury lost to Frostburg State, 37-7; King's defeated Wilkes, 34-7.
Outlook: Salisbury spent all season convincing the national pollsters it was good enough to be ranked No. 14 in Division III, and then the Sea Gulls threw it all away in the rain and mud last Saturday in Towson. Amid a sea of turnovers (a season-high seven, of which six came on Salisbury's first six possessions), the Sea Gulls were dealt a costly 37-7 defeat and knocked out of the poll. They landed as the second-highest team also receiving votes and came close to not getting a bid to the 28-team Division III tournament after starting the season 9-0. Today's winner advances to , meet No. 2 Bridgewater (Va.), which received one of the four first-round byes. Salisbury's hopes today will ride a lot on the running of freshman Dustin Johnson, who leads the nation in rushing yards per game (113.8) for a quarterback.
Johns Hopkins (8-2) at Frostburg State (6-4)
What: Eastern College Athletic Conference Southwest Regional championship
Site: Greenway Avenue Stadium, Cumberland
Time: Noon
Series: First meeting
Last week: Hopkins defeated McDaniel, 27-7; Frostburg defeated Salisbury, 37-7.
Outlook: Both teams fell short of their goal of an NCAA Division III tournament berth. This matchup sends the no-names of Hopkins against Frostburg's two legitimate Division III All-America candidates, junior QB Grant Burrough and senior DT George O'Brien.
Moravian (7-3) at McDaniel (8-2)
What: Eastern College Athletic Conference Southeast Regional championship
Site: Bair Stadium, Westminster
Time: Noon
Radio: WTTR (1470 AM)
Series: Moravian leads 7-3
Last week: McDaniel lost to Johns Hopkins, 27-7; Moravian lost to Muhlenberg, 8-0.
Outlook: With all the success the McDaniel (nee Western Maryland) football program has enjoyed over the past five seasons, there seems to be a letdown feeling around the school after a second straight loss to rival Johns Hopkins and the end of a five-year NCAA Division III tournament run. The ECAC Southeast Regional championship game doesn't quite measure up to Green Terror expectations.
Georgetown (4-6) at Towson (6-4)
Site: Towson University Stadium
Time: 12:30 p.m.
Radio: WTMD (89.7 FM)
Series: Towson leads 2-0
Last week: Towson lost to Fordham, 42-14; Georgetown lost to Colgate, 44-22.
Outlook: There's not a lot of suspense in this game; both teams appear to be limping to the finish line. Towson WR Jamal White could become the Patriot League's all-time leading receiver with six catches today, giving him 218. Georgetown QB David Paulus is completing 59 percent of his passes, has thrown for 1,274 yards and 14 touchdowns. Hoyas LB Andrew Clark established a single-game school record of 23 tackles last week and a single-game mark for solo tackles with 15.
Hampton (7-4) at Morgan State (6-5)
Site: Hughes Stadium
Time: 1 p.m.
Radio: WEAA (88.9 FM)
Series: Morgan leads 34-11-2
Last week: Morgan defeated S.C. State, 23-12; Hampton defeated North Carolina A&T;, 17-7.
Outlook: This season-ending game is mostly about Morgan's bid for its first winning season in 23 years. T.J. Stallings already has the school's single-season rushing (1,048 yards), and he'll be matched up against Hampton RB Kerry Thompson today. Thompson rushed for 112 yards last week as Hampton kept alive its hopes of gaining a three-way tie for the MEAC championship. Hampton, Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M; would finish tied for the title if Bethune-Cookman loses to Florida A&M; today and Hampton wins. Bethune-Cookman would win the title outright with a victory today.
