Status of 3 injured defenders to be determined at game time

THE BALTIMORE SUN

As the Ravens finalize plans for tomorrow's visit from the Tennessee Titans, the offensive coaches have a clear vision of whom they'll be deploying, while the defensive coaches keep making contingencies.

Wide receiver Brandon Stokley (foot) has been downgraded from questionable to doubtful. Chris Redman is feeling better, but needs at least another week before he'll be listed higher than the Ravens' third option at quarterback.

Redman nonetheless was listed on the final injury report as questionable (50-50), along with cornerback Chris McAlister and linebackers Ray Lewis and Ed Hartwell. All three of the defensive starters could be game-day decisions.

For the third straight week, Lewis was upgraded from doubtful to questionable, and if he sticks to the pattern established the last two weeks, he won't play tomorrow. Lewis practiced last week, and played at Miami, where he added a calf injury to a dislocated shoulder. Two weeks ago, he did not practice, and sat out the Cincinnati game. Lewis did not participate in practice this week.

Thursday's knee injury added Hartwell to the injury report.

"He thinks he's going to be OK," coach Brian Billick said. "It's sore, but there's nothing structurally that's at risk. It's just a matter of dealing with soreness, so we should be in good shape. Ray's feeling better; we'll see what the game time is. Chris McAlister will also be game time."

Asked if he was healthy enough to supplant Anthony Wright as the backup quarterback behind starter Jeff Blake, Redman said his back is feeling stronger.

"That's the best I've felt in a month, as far as the pain," Redman said. "Obviously, there's still some stiffness there, kind of like in my hamstring. As soon as that gets out I feel I'll be able to go. Jeff and Anthony are probably going to take 1 and 2, but I'll be there in the event of an emergency."

Guard Edwin Mulitalo (chest) and defensive end Tony Weaver (knee) remain probable.

Scott next

Bernardo Harris is listed as the backup to both Lewis and Hartwell, the inside linebackers in the Ravens' 3-4 scheme. If both are out, Harris would be joined in the center of the defense by Bart Scott, a rookie free agent from Southern Illinois who's been active on special teams.

"I'm ready to get in there," Scott said. "That's the nature of the NFL. Guys go down, we have to step it up. Being the third or fourth guy removed, you get a taste of everything. I've bounced from dime to backer, and now I'm back at backer, but it's always good to know more than one position."

Not so fast

Tennessee has the worst punt cover unit in the NFL, but the Ravens' Lamont Brightful says that's misleading.

"That ranking is deceptive," he said. "We know that they gave up some returns early in the year, but since then they've been pretty good. They had a few new guys on the unit, and they've tightened it down."

Brightful set a franchise record with his 95-yard return for a touchdown against the Bengals.
