30 indicted as police break drug ring in city's east side

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Authorities have broken up an East Baltimore drug ring resulting in the indictments of 30 people, as well as two Dominican cocaine suppliers who worked out of New York, the state's attorney's office announced yesterday.

The Dominicans were charged by federal authorities, and most of the other defendants are scheduled to be arraigned next week in Baltimore Circuit Court.

Police have been locating and arresting members of the drug ring since they were indicted Aug. 29 on a variety of charges, including being a drug kingpin and conspiracy to distribute drugs.

Investigators are still looking for about five people, said Assistant State's Attorney Jill J. Myers.

Charged with being the kingpin of the organization is Clayton "Lurch" White, 29, of the 5300 block of King Arthur Circle in Baltimore County.

The organization, which has been operating mostly in the Canton, Highlandtown and Dundalk areas since 1998, was brought down by the joint work of city, federal and Baltimore and Harford counties' law enforcement agencies, and through extensive wiretap surveillance.

Myers, chief of the wiretap unit in the state's attorney's office, said the taps are effective because investigators listen as drug dealers identify one another over the phone.

"We get in on conversations and they implicate each other," Myers said. "We can get the full scope, people you wouldn't see on the street. We get the mid-level and sources of supply."

Items seized by police included 2 1/2 kilograms of cocaine, marijuana and oxycodone, as well as expensive cars, jewelry and jet skis.
