COLLEGE PARK - The Maryland women's program took the first step in its rebuilding project last night, dispatching Loyola, 80-72, before 2,725 in the first regular-season college basketball game played at the Comcast Center.

The first home game played outside of Cole Field House was also the first in the tenure of coach Brenda Frese, who came here from Minnesota in April. She replaced Chris Weller, who retired after 27 years.

In the debut, Frese got 16 points from senior Renneika Razor and 15 from fellow guard Vicki Brick to lead five players in double figures. Maryland (1-0) shot 54 percent in the second half and used a 10-2 run early on to overcome 22 turnovers and stay away from the Greyhounds (0-1).

In a game where officials called 49 fouls, the Terps had two inside players - Charmaine Carr and Crystal Washington (11 points) - foul out and needed to use five guards.

"I was pleased with our composure and our confidence down the stretch," Frese said. "We were faced with a lot of adversity in this game."

Freshman forward Angel Ross scored 10 of her 11 points in the first half, including a basket with 7:40 left to give the Terps a 22-13 lead. Then Razor, one of three returners in the starting lineup, scored eight points over the final six minutes of the half.

With her team down 35-27 at the half, Loyola center Katie Netherton converted two quick baskets and Shontrese Smith added one to cut Maryland's lead to 37-33 with 17:30 left.

But a pair of three-pointers by Razor and Terri Daniels sparked a 10-2 Terps run over 1:47. Two free throws by Daniels stretched the lead to 47-35 at the 15:11 mark.

Loyola got 14 points from Netherton and 10 from Amy Dessart Mager, but never got closer than six over the final 10 minutes.

"You try to put yourself into a position to win the game on the road," said Loyola coach Candi Cage, whose team shot 39 percent for the game and also committed 22 turnovers. "We missed some free throws in crucial times down the stretch, had some easy looks that didn't go."

NOTES: Maryland, which plays Sunday at Niagara, changed its times for second-round Terrapin Classic games on Nov. 30. The games will be at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. ... Daniels (St. Mary's) had 10 points and seven assists for the Terps.
