THE BALTIMORE SUN

Dr. Paul Wolfe Roman, a radiologist who was chief of radiology at the former Lutheran Hospital for more than three decades, died of pneumonia Saturday at Sinai Hospital. The former Pikesville resident was 87.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Dr. Roman was a 1930 City College graduate. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Johns Hopkins University in 1933, and his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Roman enlisted in the Army Medical Corps before World War II, and during the war served aboard a troop transport in the Atlantic theater. He attained the rank of captain.

After studying radiology at the University of Pennsylvania, he completed a two-year residency in the discipline at the former Baltimore City Hospitals. He opened a private practice on Eutaw Place in 1948, and later moved to an office at 11 E. Chase St., where he remained until retiring in 1990.

He was chief of radiology at Lutheran Hospital from 1953 to 1985.

"He was a dedicated and compassionate physician, a loving husband and father, and someone for whom a high standard of ethics and professionalism was a cornerstone," said his son, Arnold M. Roman of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Dr. Roman, who had lived at Roland Park Place since 1997, was an avid flower gardener. He also enjoyed woodworking and home repair projects, and was a member of Chizuk Amuno Congregation.

Services were held Sunday.

Dr. Roman is also survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Helen Jaffe; two daughters, Sheila T. Rees of Maplewood, N.J., and Ellen R. Rothschild of Ellicott City; and three grandchildren.
