The state fire marshal's office is investigating two early-morning fires yesterday, one near Union Bridge that consumed hundreds of large bales of straw and a second in Mount Airy that damaged a workshop, a garage and a classic car.
About 2 a.m., 1,700 to 2,000 large bales burned at Stambaugh's Inc. in the 4100 block of Hawks Hill Road west of Union Bridge, according to the fire marshal's office. The bales were in a pile 20 feet wide, 100 feet long and 12 feet high.
Volunteer firefighters from New Windsor, Union Bridge, Libertytown, Winfield and Pleasant Valley brought the fire under control in 10 minutes. Equipment was brought in to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby mulch piles.
In Mount Airy, a fire began about 4:30 a.m. in a workshop in the 400 block of Hill St. The fire heavily damaged a two-story, barn-style garage and an attached, single-car garage, causing an estimated $100,000 damage to the buildings and contents, according to the fire marshal's office and Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company.
The fire was under control in 30 minutes, authorities said. It destroyed a classic 1967 Ford Galaxy two-door convertible, damaged an older model pickup truck and caused minor damage to a car parked outside. The workshop contained woodworking tools, other equipment and exotic lumber, the fire marshal reported.
The cause of each fire is under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call the fire marshal's office at 888-214- 7892.
