Hazel Johnson, an educational psychologist for Baltimore's public school system, died of pneumonia Thursday at Pickersgill Retirement Community, where she had lived since 1993. She was 86 and previously resided in Lutherville.
Hazel Elizabeth Ring grew up in Catonsville and was a 1933 graduate of Catonsville High School.
In 1935, she married Ralph I. Johnson, transportation manager at Western Maryland Dairy, who died in 1988.
She returned to college in the 1950s and earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from the Johns Hopkins University in 1962. She earned a master's degree in education from the University of Maryland in 1968 and soon began working as a psychologist for the city schools, helping troubled children. She retired in 1985.
She was an avid gardener and did crossword puzzles.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N. Charles St.
She is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Johnson Wehr of Roland Park; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
