Forty years. Twenty films. Five 007s. And still, somehow, Bond, James Bond, retains his slick mystique.
In five days -- 40 years after Dr. No, the first film to feature the perpetually cool secret agent -- the newest Bond movie will open. As we wait for Die Another Day, starring four-time Bond Pierce Brosnan and Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry to hit the screens, here's one fan's highly personal list of favorite moments and most interesting trivia:
Best local connection
George Lazenby. The one-time James Bond who starred in the 1969 film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, is married to tennis star and Baltimore native Pam Shriver.
Best name for a Bond girl
Pussy Galore, played by Honor Blackman, in the 1964 movie Goldfinger. How they got away with that one, I'll never know.
Best Bond villain
Jaws. Seven-foot-two-inch Richard Kiel and his mouth full of steel was so popular in the 1977 film The Spy Who Loved Me that he was brought back two years later for Moonraker.
Best gadget
"Little Nellie." When Bond, played in 1967 by Sean Connery in You Only Live Twice, uses this one-man autogyro to avert World War III, it's one of the few times that the secret agent dispatches villains without a car. Besides, how may autogyros with missile-firing capabilities have you seen that can be packed in a couple of suitcases?
Best theme song
"Live and Let Die." Say what you will about Wings, this 1973 title song by Paul and Linda McCartney is a classic. Shirley Bassey singing Goldfinger is hard to forget, but I'm a rock 'n' roller.
Best villain headquarters
Blofeld's hollowed out volcano from 1967's You Only Live Twice. Though spoofed effectively in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, the second "Austin Powers" film, the set was so big that it contained a working monorail, a launch pad and helicopter platform.
Best Bond one-liner
Sean Connery meeting Ursula Andress' Honey Ryder for the first time in 1962's Dr. No. The now infamous (at least among Bond fans) scene depicts Honey walking out of the ocean in a bikini (also re-created by Halle Berry in Die Another Day).
Andress: "Looking for shells?"
Bond: "No, I'm just looking."
Best villain one-liner
Goldfinger, the villain in the 1964 film of the same name, threatening to kill Bond, who is strapped to a table, with a laser.
Bond: "Do you expect me to talk?"
Goldfinger: "No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die."
Best kept secret
Benicio Del Toro. The then-unknown actor and future star of Traffic, the year 2000's hit film that also featured Michael Douglas, played evil henchman Dario opposite Timothy Dalton in 1989's Licence to Kill.
Best Bond car
Aston Martin DB5. The gadget-laden vehicle from the 1964 and 1965 films Goldfinger and Thunderball, with its machine guns, smoke screen and ejector seat, is one of the most vivid images from the Sean Connery era. The Aston Martin makes its return in Die Another Day.
Best stunt
Roger Moore in 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me. In this eye-popping stunt, Moore skis off a mountain and free-falls before opening a parachute sporting an image of the Union Jack. In comparison, Brosnan's amazing bungee jump at the start of 1995's Goldeneye falls short.
Best family connection
Christopher Lee. Lee, who in 1974 played the main villain Scaramanga in The Man with the Golden Gun, is a first cousin to Bond creator Ian Fleming.
