Senior All-American Carissa Messimer took a pass from sophomore Colleen Barbieri and scored in the fifth minute of overtime to give Maryland a 2-1 win over William & Mary in the first round of the NCAA field hockey tournament.
Messimer's goal, which ended a long afternoon of rain-soaked play at Foreman Field in Norfolk, Va., atoned for the forward's missed penalty stroke in the first half that kept William & Mary (12-9) within a goal at halftime. The Tribe got the tying goal in the 61st minute on Kate Baird's penalty corner.
The Terps (17-4) advanced to today's second round, where they'll meet Old Dominion.
