Maryland women top American, advance to NCAA 2nd round; Loyola's season ends

The No. 17 Maryland women's soccer team used another strong second-half performance to defeat American, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA tournament last night at Ludwig Field in College Park.

The Terps advanced to the second round and will face Penn State, which defeated Princeton, 2-0, earlier in the day. The Maryland-Penn State game is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow in College Park.

Kimmy Francis paced the Terrapins' offense with nine shots and scored the game's lone goal in the 60th minute.

No. 10 West Virginia 3, Loyola 0: Chrissie Abbott scored her team-leading 20th goal of the season 6:17 into the first half to help lead the host Mountaineers over the Greyhounds in the first round.

The Greyhounds, who won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title for the third straight season last weekend, were making their second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. Loyola fell to Princeton, 3-1, in the first round last year.

Men

Maryland 4, Clemson 3: Wilde Lake graduate Ian Rodway scored an unassisted goal in the third minute of overtime to lift the Terps (15-4-0) to the semifinal victory over the Tigers (12-4-3) in Cary, N.C.

The Terps advance to the Atlantic Coast Conference final at 1 p.m. tomorrow, when they'll meet Virginia.

Maryland held a 3-2 lead as late as the 74th minute on goals from Abe Thompson, Clarence Goodson and Domenic Mediate, but Clemson's Steven Rhyne tied the score with five minutes left.

Loyola 4, Siena 2: Juliano Adriano de Oliveira scored a late goal and had an assist in a five-goal second half as the top-seeded Greyhounds held on to beat Siena in the MAAC semifinals in Lawerenceville, N.J.

Loyola (12-4-3), which won its sixth straight game, advanced to the final at noon tomorrow against Marist.

Messiah 1, Salisbury 0: Matt Bills scored the game's only goal midway through the second half as the Falcons eliminated the sixth-ranked Sea Gulls (15-3-1) from the NCAA Division III tournament in Roanoke, Va.

Virginia Commonwealth 4, Towson 0: The Tigers (10-8-2) came up short in Virginia Beach, Va., against the 18th-ranked Rams (14-4-1), who advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship after outshooting Towson 30-4.
