Damascus starts quickly, runs past Broadneck, 25-7

THE BALTIMORE SUN

An eight-game winning streak and the home-field advantage were not enough to offset sloppy play as Broadneck was beaten, 25-7, by Montgomery County's Damascus in a Class 4A quarterfinal playoff game last night.

The Bruins turned the ball over six times and allowed three big scoring plays. The tone was set early when Damascus tailback Sean Delaney turned a simple off-tackle play into a 54-yard scoring romp on the Hornets' second play from scrimmage to make it 6-0.

Broadneck (9-2) never really recovered, with its offense being slowed by the muddy field and Damacus' sturdy, alert defense. The Bruins fell behind 12-0 early in the second quarter when Damascus quarterback Mike Moquin hit wide receiver Eric Kasch on a quick out pattern on a fourth-and-two play.

Disaster struck Broadneck with eight minutes left in the half when Kasch broke a tackle and turned up the sideline for a 29-yard scoring play. The completion capped a 10-play drive.

Broadneck got its only glimmer of hope two possessions later after surviving a fumble at its 20. On a second-and-10 play, senior quarterback Freddie Steinmark avoided the Damascus pressure and lofted a desperate, deep ball to wide receiver Eshawn Jones. Cleverly adjusting, Jones avoided his defender and made a finger-tip catch. He had clear sailing for the final 60 yards, and Broadneck trailed just 12-7 after the extra point by Chris Desautels.

But Damascus, now 9-2, responded just three plays after the kickoff to take control. Moquin, making just his third start of the season, again found Kasch deep down the sideline. Just as he did earlier, Kasch avoided two tacklers and scored on a 64-yard play.

The senior wide receiver said his team is now comfortable with its junior signal caller following an injury to senior starter Pat Flynn.

"It was tough at first," said Kasch. "But he's really stepped it up by working real hard. We have a great running game, but we can pass it, too."

Moquin finished the game completing four of seven passes for 116 yards. He added a touchdown early in the third quarter.
