Boys Soccer State Finals

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Today

Class 1A: No. 9 Oakland Mills (12-4) vs. Smithsburg (13-4-1)

Site: UMBC

Time: Noon

Outlook: The Scorpions seek a state-record 12th state title and their fourth in the past five years. Smithsburg, from Washington County, appears in its first state final. Oakland Mills is more skilled than last season, when it lost in the final to Pocomoke, but still depends mainly on set plays for its offense, which is so balanced that no player has scored more than five goals. The Scorpions, with just two returning starters from a year ago, have eight shutouts and are unscored-upon in the playoffs. Oakland Mills coach Don Shea's teams at Elkton and Oakland Mills have combined for eight state titles, second best all-time among coaches. Smithsburg is a stylish team with big, fast forwards. The Leopards play a diamond defense and start eight seniors.

Class 3A: No. 2 River Hill (15-2-1) vs. No. 5 Dulaney (14-4)

Site: UMBC

Time: 5 p.m.

Outlook: The three-time state champion Hawks are in the state final for the fifth time in the school's seven-year history and have won six regional titles. They are led offensively by two quick forwards, Mo Hamzeh (17 goals) and Justin Hughes (10 goals, 14 assists). River Hill goalkeeper Dave Marquart has 11 shutouts. The Hawks defeated Dulaney in the final game of the regular season, 3-1. River Hill's Bill Stara, the former Centennial coach, has guided a state-record 10 state championship teams. Dulaney has won four straight regional titles for coach Steve Shaw and won its only state championship in 1999. The Lions are led offensively by James Russo (17 goals) and Sean Rush (13 assists), and defensively by sweeper Danny Keppeler.
