Two men's deaths put homicide count in city at 224

Baltimore's homicide tally grew Wednesday with the deaths of two men from earlier violence, police said.

Angelo Hill, 41, of the 3200 block of Hayward Ave. died at Sinai Hospital from stab wounds suffered when a man attacked him in the 4600 block of Reisterstown Road on Oct. 20. No arrest has been made in that case.

The other victim, Samuel T. Hill, 68, had lived at the Abbey Schaefer Hotel in the 700 block of St. Paul St. He died at an area hospital from the effects of smoke inhalation suffered in a fire Aug. 2, 2001. The blaze extensively damaged the hotel and displaced several other residents.

Patricia Ann Farley, 38, was arrested shortly after the fire and pleaded guilty to arson and reckless endangerment. She is serving a 20-year prison sentence.

There have been 224 homicides this year, compared with 225 at this time last year.

Judge sentences city man to 10 years for drug dealing

A Baltimore man was sentenced in city Circuit Court yesterday to 10 years in prison for drug dealing, the state's attorney's office reported.

Brandon Allison, 22, of the 600 block of W. Lexington St. was arrested Jan. 21 after detectives searched two addresses in the 800 block of W. Fayette St. They found more than an ounce of crack cocaine with a street value of $1,000, and more than 200 vials of individually packaged crack cocaine.

Allison was sentenced by Judge John C. Themelis as part of a plea deal.

Man gets 5 years in prison for handgun violation

A 30-year-old man was handed a five-year prison sentence without the possibility of parole yesterday in Baltimore Circuit Court for his conviction in a jury trial of being a felon in possession of a handgun, the state's attorney's office said.

Wayne Fischer of the 1100 block of Woodington Road was stopped by police for a traffic violation July 13, 2001, and officers discovered a handgun in his car, according to prosecutors. At the time, Fischer was on parole for attempted second-degree murder in connection with a 1997 shooting.

Sunday Mass to honor 8 killed in El Salvador in '89

A memorial Mass to commemorate the killing of six Jesuit priests and two housekeeping employees in El Salvador in 1989 will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, Calvert and Madison streets in downtown Baltimore.

The Rev. Alvaro Ribeiro, a Jesuit priest from the Jesuit China province, will preach the sermon. The parish's pastor, the Rev. William J. Watters, will be the celebrant. Candles symbolizing the lives of those killed will be lighted.

The event is the 13th annual observance of the assassination at the Jesuit school in San Salvador. A free reception will follow the service.

Woman, 35, identified as fatal stabbing victim

CATONSVILLE - Baltimore County police have identified a woman who was found fatally stabbed in an apartment Wednesday evening as Laurie Denise Alexander, 35, of the 300 block of Sunshine Place.

Alexander was discovered inside a ground-level apartment at the Cedar Run Apartments in the Academy Heights neighborhood. A 36-year-old man, whom police did not identify, was found stabbed on the sidewalk outside the building, police spokesman Bill Toohey said. The man was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he is in serious condition.

The two victims, whose relationship was not disclosed, lived across the hall from one another. In a 911 call about 6:30 p.m., the man reported that he had been hurt in a struggle with a woman inside the building, Toohey said. County police are continuing their investigation.

Police identify man killed trying to cross Liberty Rd.

RANDALLSTOWN - A Woodlawn man was identified by Baltimore County police yesterday as the pedestrian killed Wednesday night trying to cross Liberty Road.

Police said John I. Phears, 62, of the 2000 block of Woodlawn Drive was crossing Liberty Road near Chapman Road when he was hit by a car headed west.

Police said no charges have been filed against the driver, who was not identified.

Concert Sunday to benefit daughter of sniper victim

TOWSON - A benefit concert will be held Sunday at Recher Theater to raise money for 3-year-old Jocelyn Lewis-Rivera, whose mother, Lori Ann Lewis-Rivera, was one of five people fatally shot by the Washington-area sniper Oct. 3.

The bands Ten Ton Nod, Pornomint, Cypher, Supine and HTD are scheduled to perform at the show from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Doors will open at 3 p.m. and a minimum donation of $10 is requested. All proceeds will go to Jocelyn.

Lori Ann Lewis-Rivera was killed the morning of Oct. 3 while vacuuming her van at a gas station in Montgomery County.

An article in Thursday's editions of The Sun misidentified the man who died Wednesday of stab wounds suffered during an attack Oct. 20 in the 4600 block of Reisterstown Road. The victim was Ernest Sawyer, 50, of the 5300 block of Midwood Ave. Angelo Hill, 41, was a bystander and was not harmed.The Sun regrets the errors.
