TUCSON, Ariz. -- After lining up one more candidate for an interview, Orioles owner Peter Angelos said yesterday that he hopes to name a new vice president of baseball operations next week.
The Orioles will resume their interviews today when Seattle Mariners vice president of scouting and player development Roger Jongewaard meets with Angelos and the team's general legal counsel, Russell Smouse.
The newest candidate is Milwaukee Brewers special assignment scout David Wilder, who will interview for the job Friday.
Wilder was the Brewers' assistant general manager under former GM Dean Taylor but was reassigned into a pro scouting role under new GM Doug Melvin.
Angelos has interviewed Detroit Tigers assistant GM Al Avila, former Montreal Expos GM Jim Beattie, Arizona Diamondbacks assistant GM Sandy Johnson and former Chicago White Sox GM Ron Schueler.
Former Orioles pitcher and current broadcaster Mike Flanagan has not had an official interview for the position, but he remains the popular in-house choice after spending the past several years as a consultant to Angelos.
Angelos is looking to replace current vice president of baseball operations Syd Thrift, who guided the six-member Orioles contingent through this week's general managers' meetings.
"Our goal," Angelos said, "is to have the effort completed by the end of next week."
Jongewaard has been with the Mariners for the past 17 years. He interviewed for their GM job when they hired former Orioles GM Pat Gillick in 1999. He also interviewed to be the San Diego Padres' GM in the 1980s.
"To get a chance to be a GM, this is what I've waited for," Jongewaard told The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
"It's an honor to be interviewed. I've put in a lot of hard work, and this is kind of a reward."
