Junior Matt Bills' penalty kick in the 65th minute gave host Messiah College a 1-0 win over Johns Hopkins University in Grantham, Pa., yesterday in the first round of the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament.
Bills was awarded the penalty kick after being taken down by Hopkins goalkeeper Gary Kane in the penalty box. Kane finished the game with five saves; Dave Casper stopped two Blue Jay shots for Messiah.
The Blue Jays, whose 11-game winning streak ended, finished the season 17-3. Messiah (18-2-1) advanced to play Salisbury in a region semifinal tomorrow.

Stevens Tech 1, Johns Hopkins 0: Sophomore forward Valerie Barnhart scored in the 56th minute to give the Ducks (13-6-1) the win over the visiting Blue Jays (14-6-2) in Hoboken, N.J., in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
Barnhart took a pass from Becky Gonter and scored from 15 yards into the lower left corner of the net.
The Blue Jays held an 11-7 advantage in shots but were denied by Stevens Tech goalie Rommy Guevara, who ended with five saves.
Mary Washington 5, College of Notre Dame 0: Jacqui Forsythe scored twice to lead the host Eagles (16-4-1) over the Gators (11-8) in Fredericksburg, Va., in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.
Westminster (Pa.) 4, Frostburg State 1: Tammy Newell scored twice and assisted on a third goal to power the host Titans (16-5-2) over the Bobcats (10-8-4) in the NCAA Division III tournament's first round.
Field hockey
McDaniel 6, College of Notre Dame 0: Six players scored for the Green Terror (19-3) as it routed the visiting Gators (12-10) in an NCAA Division III first-round game. McDaniel will face Rowan University in the second round on Saturday.
