WITH THE efforts of Severn River Lions Club President Oliver Wittig, former principal of Severna Park High School, and retired teacher and Lion Nancy Burns, the Lions have melded a Severna Park Middle School club called Youth Rise with the Lions' student organization, the Leo Club (Leo is an acronym for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity), to create the Youth Rise Leo Club at the school.
The new Youth Rise Leo Club helps sixth-, seventh-and eighth-graders develop leadership skills as they channel their youthful enthusiasm into service projects.
More than 40 pupils at a recent Youth Rise Leo Club meeting heard "thank-you" letters read from Johns Hopkins Hospital's pediatric oncology department and Hopkins Children's House for the decorated pumpkins and Halloween treats the pupils had made.
Then, teachers Debbie Sparby and Judy Crawford, Burns and parent volunteer Sharon Crum helped members make place mats to use when they lend a hand in serving Thanksgiving dinner at Sunrise Assisted Living in Severna Park. Other pupils decorated collection boxes and barrels for toys donated to the 2002 Sharing Foundation, an Arnold-based organization that assists children of the working needy in Anne Arundel County.

Senior center carnival
"The Greatest Carnival on Earth," so say its planners, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Arnold Senior Center. Games such as ring toss, cakewalk, bingo and minigolf are designed for those who prefer their carnival "rides" on the ground. Prizes are also adult-friendly, but refreshments will appeal to all ages: hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn and peanuts, as well as Maryland-style crab soup and home-baked goods. Information: the center, 410-222-1922.
Bull roast to aid elderly
A bull and oyster roast to benefit Partners In Care is set for 7 p.m. to midnight tomorrow at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie. Ashtin Golt Showtime Band will offer live music, and the menu will include pit beef and oysters on the half shell, cherrystone clams, sausage, chicken, ham, barbecued beef and hot dogs, assorted vegetables, salads and desserts, along with beverages and a cash bar. Entertainment includes a silent auction, game wheel and door prizes.
Tickets - $35 each or 10 for $300 - are available at Michael's Eighth Avenue and at the Partners In Care office at 348 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park. Sponsored by Harbor Hospital's Life Resource Center and Morningside House, an assisted-living facility, the event will help Partners in Care fulfill its goal of making it easier for elderly and disabled county residents to continue to live in their own homes.
